Uasin gishu: Uasin Gishu County Security Team held a forum with stakeholders from multiple institutions of higher learning, focusing on peace and security for societal benefit. The Multiagency Team, chaired by County Commissioner Dr. Eddyson Nyale, convened the meeting under the theme ‘Jukwaa La Wasomi,’ aiming to educate scholars on maintaining a peaceful environment in the county.
According to Kenya News Agency, the forum, held at the County Multipurpose Hall in Eldoret, saw participation from institutions such as Moi University, Eldoret Polytechnic, and Rift Valley Technical Training Institute, among others. Dr. Nyale emphasized that the platform, akin to the nationwide ‘Jukwaa la Usalama,’ allows stakeholders to contribute inputs on improving security service delivery within communities. The initiative is informed by UN Security Council Resolution 2250, which underscores the role of youth in international peace and security.
Dr. Nyale emphasized the necessity for Kenya to engage youth through ‘Jukwaa La Wasomi,’ aligning with the peace and security convention for youth. The resolution encourages member states to empower youth as partners in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and decision-making processes. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fostering youth participation in peace processes and addressing youth-related challenges such as radicalization and violence within educational settings.
Eng. Martha Cheruto, Uasin Gishu County Executive for Trade and Industrialization, representing the Governor, commended the forum for prioritizing youth voices in peacebuilding and development. She highlighted that peace extends beyond conflict absence, encompassing justice and opportunity, which are essential for educational and economic growth.
Stakeholders from various institutions highlighted specific security concerns. Edwin Lagat of Moi University addressed the lack of streetlights on the Chebarus-Cheboiywa road, leading to nighttime attacks. Abigail Chelagat from Moiben Technical Training Institute raised issues of overcrowding and inadequate resources, seeking county land for expansion. Kelvin Kibet from Koshin TTI and Adeli Akwele from KMTC discussed drug abuse near their institutions, urging law enforcement intervention and better housing solutions for students to mitigate exposure to crime and violence.
The forum underscored the collective responsibility of educational institutions and local authorities in promoting a secure and peaceful environment conducive to learning and community development.
