Leaders from Nandi County have been asked to identify young people who are idling in the villages and enroll them to Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institutions.
Nandi County Commissioner Herman Shambi said the move will enable the youths to acquire professional skills to better their lives and afford a decent living.
Shambi noted that during his peace campaign tour to the villages, he discovered that many young people are spending their lives drinking alcohol instead of doing something meaningful.
“We don’t want to have any Form Four leavers languishing in the villages without training and yet the government is doing its best to provide technical education and capitation grants,” he said.
The County Commissioner stated that the aim of the Programme is to equip the youth with practical skills which will enable them to either access gainful employment as engineers, technicians, craftsmen or venture into self-employment.
“We want as many young people as possible to get an opportunity to train in different field that are market driven to address unemployment and better their lives,” he said.
Shambi said there is no Country that has developed without TVET skills and that’s why the Government has invested more in the sector.
He said local administrators should work with elected leaders to ensure more youths especially those in the villages enroll in the Institutions.
Nandi County has various registered TVET Institutions among them Olessos, Aldai, Emgwen, Cheptarit, Kaiboi among others.
According to Shambi, when we equip our youth with technical skills, we are not only making them employable but instilling entrepreneurship skills that make them escape poverty.
