Kuria: Kuria region, known for its fertile farmlands and abundant rainfall, faces significant challenges due to deep-seated insecurity and traditional practices that hinder its development. The region, located between the Migori River and the Mara River, and bordering Trans-Mara Sub-County in Narok County and the Republic of Tanzania, is home to the Kuria tribe, which is divided into four clans across two constituencies, Kuria East and Kuria West.
According to Kenya News Agency, insecurity issues such as cattle theft, land disputes, female genital mutilation (FGM), and smuggling of illegal goods plague the area. These problems have tarnished the region’s reputation, yet non-Kuria individuals continue to move to the area for land acquisition. The ongoing conflicts within the Kuria community, particularly the recent infighting between Bwirege and Nyabasi clans over cattle theft that resulted in a fatality, highlight the deep-rooted issues.
The rising tensions led to the premature closure of Biasumu Primary School, disrupting education and farming activities. In response, the Nyanza Regional security team, led by Regional Commissioner Florah Mworoa, organized a security baraza to address the escalating violence. The meeting followed the unresolved murder of an assistant chief, emphasizing the region’s security challenges.
Community leaders, like Biasumu resident Kechoko Kibiriti, advocate for dialogue and community policing to restore peace. Kibiriti expressed frustration over the growing cattle theft syndicate and urged the community to share information to aid security efforts. He criticized the deployment of ineffective government officials to the area, suggesting it was used as a punitive measure due to the region’s hostility.
Businessperson Peter Ombuna highlighted the impact of insecurity on economic prospects, noting his hesitance to invest in the region. He attributed the persistence of issues like insecurity and FGM to the lack of unified political leadership. Despite initiatives like the Awendo and Tarime Peace Declaration, peace remains elusive, with promises frequently unfulfilled.
The enduring problems in Kuria underscore a need for community engagement in addressing security and fostering dialogue for sustainable peace. As the region grapples with these challenges, a collaborative approach involving both security forces and community members is essential to reclaim the region’s potential and ensure a safer future.
