Kipchoge Stadium Reconstruction On Track-Intime For Mashujaa, CS

Eldoret: Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary (CS), Kipchumba Murkomen, has expressed satisfaction with the progress of construction works at the Kipchoge Stadium in Eldoret, assuring the facility is on schedule to host this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations. Murkomen noted that the 15,000-seater stadium, which is being supervised by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), is being developed to international standards and will significantly enhance the North Rift’s capacity to host major sporting events.

According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen highlighted during an inspection tour that the eastern and western wings of the stadium were nearing completion, and the canopy was being imported to arrive in time for the October 20 celebrations. He emphasized the stadium’s design, which includes skyboxes, VIP facilities, changing rooms, a podium and other amenities that meet international standards.

Murkomen remarked that while the facility’s completion is crucial for Mashujaa Day, its significance extends beyond the event by positioning Eldoret as a destination for international sporting events. The stadium could potentially host continental football matches, including games involving teams from Egypt and other African countries. He noted the region’s athletics reputation as an added advantage.

The CS further elaborated on the government’s efforts in developing sports facilities in Kapsabet and Iten, with plans for 340-bed hostels to support sports training and talent development. The Mashujaa Day programme will not only focus on infrastructure but also include cultural, sporting, security and financial activities across Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet.

Grassroots sporting competitions are set to commence in September, with participants competing from the village level to regional finals. Cultural auditions are already underway to identify musicians, actors and other creatives for the celebrations. The government has identified sports, security and finance as the key themes, with events planned in various locations across the counties.

Murkomen also addressed concerns regarding the possible relocation of graves near the stadium, ensuring that any relocation would be conducted respectfully and with public participation. He emphasized the importance of consultations to maintain cultural sensitivity in the process.

Uasin Gishu Governor, Jonathan Bii, expressed readiness for the Mashujaa Day celebrations, commending President William Ruto for selecting the region as co-hosts. He highlighted the development projects already attracted by the co-hosting arrangement, including road upgrades and sports infrastructure, expressing confidence in the stadium’s completion after years of delays.

The main Mashujaa Day celebrations will take place at Kipchoge Stadium on October 20, with related activities spread across the three North Rift counties. The CS was accompanied by other government officials and leaders from the co-hosting counties during his visit.
