Kapyego: Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has defended the government’s fuel subsidy and fertiliser reform programs, stating these measures are vital to mitigate the rising cost of living driven by global economic disruptions and international conflicts. Kindiki spoke during the launch of the Cherangany Hills Ecosystem Restoration for Livelihood Improvement, Sustainability and Harmony (CHERISH) programme in Kapyego, Elgeyo Marakwet County, emphasizing the economic challenges the Kenya Kwanza administration inherited in 2022, which included high inflation and escalating food prices.
According to Kenya News Agency, Kindiki highlighted that the government under President William Ruto has initiated several strategies to stabilize the economy and alleviate pressure on citizens. He mentioned that reducing the cost of fertiliser was one of the administration’s first actions, aiming to support farmers and boost food production nationwide. Kindiki also defended the fuel stabilisation measures, noting the gradual reduction of pump prices by about 43 shillings over time to shield households and businesses from rising transport and production costs.
Kindiki acknowledged the recent hike in fuel prices, attributing it to international conflicts, specifically between Israel, Iran, and the United States, which have disrupted global shipping routes and increased logistical expenses for petroleum imports. He explained that the government has reduced the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petroleum products from 16 percent to 8 percent and introduced significant fuel subsidies to prevent further price surges and maintain economic stability since 2022.
The Deputy President criticized political leaders for making unrealistic promises, particularly regarding taxation and public spending, underscoring the necessity of balanced taxation policies to fund development projects and essential services. He called for dialogue and negotiations to resolve disputes, assuring citizens of the administration’s openness to engaging with all stakeholders.
Kindiki encouraged young people to focus on securing their future through constructive engagement and responsible leadership. He reassured Kenyans that the government would persist in implementing policies to alleviate the cost of living despite global economic pressures, urging political leaders to adopt honest leadership and practical solutions.
