Kericho County Government has secured funding for the construction of a sewerage plant in Litein town, courtesy of the German Development Bank and the Government of Kenya.
The scope of the project which is scheduled to begin in December this year, will include the expansion and rehabilitation of Itare Water Project, the construction of a sewerage network and a waste water treatment plant in Litein town.
Litein, which is one of the fastest growing towns in the County does not have a sewerage system and its dwellers currently rely on septic tanks and pit latrines.
Subsequently, Litein water project is envisaged to improve water and sanitation standards in the fast-growing urban centre to cater for the needs of the town residents who have lacked a steady supply of clean drinking water over the years.
Kericho County Executive for Lands, Barnabas K. Ngeno, speaking on behalf of Governor Prof. Paul Chepkwony during a visit to Kimugu water project in Kericho town Saturday, welcomed the foreign support and thanked all the relevant stakeholders for such a noble intervention.
The team inspected the ongoing Sh 1.2 billion expansion works at Kimugu water project in Duka moja near Kericho town, together with the officials from the Ministry of Water & Irrigation and the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency.
The Ministry of Water and Sanitation in conjunction with Development Bank of Germany and Lake Victoria South Water Department Agency (LVSWWDA) is expanding Kimugu Water Supply project, that will see over 200,000 residents of Kericho town and its environs connected with water, receiving approximately 13 million litres of clean water daily by end of this year, according to the MD Kericho Water and Sanitation, Eric Siele.
The project is one of the key flagships of President Uhuru Kenyatta under food component in the Big Four Agenda and is now at over 97 per cent completion, according to the resident engineer Fabian Masinde.
During the function, German Development Bank was represented by Simone sieler, while LVSWWDA was represented by the Ag. CEO Chrispin Juma.
