Mombasa: The Kenya Primary School Heads Association (KEPSHA) is set to undergo a significant transformation by changing its name to the Kenya Comprehensive Schools Heads Association (KECSHA). This change is part of ongoing education reforms in the country.
According to Kenya News Agency, the announcement was made during the KEPSHA National Annual General Meeting and Conference at Sheikh Ali Zayed Children’s Home in Mombasa. KEPSHA’s National Chairman, Mr. Fuad Ali Abdalla, emphasized that the transition reflects the evolving structure of the education system, particularly with the inclusion of junior schools within primary institutions.
Mr. Abdalla explained that this transition is in line with recommendations from the 2023 Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms, as detailed in Sessional Paper No. 1 of 2025. These recommendations advocate for strengthening leadership and supporting comprehensive schools nationwide. He noted that managing junior secondary schools under primary school administration has been effective, with students integrating well with their peers.
The chairman also highlighted the progress of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, noting that learners are transitioning smoothly from primary and junior school to senior secondary school. He praised the new curriculum, stating that it has matured, with the first phase of Grade 9 completed successfully and assessments conducted peacefully for Grades 6 and 9.
Mr. Abdalla pointed out that over 15,000 school heads attended the conference to celebrate the success of the CBE, which has fostered engaged, resilient, and morally upright learners. He emphasized that the CBE framework promotes active participation among teachers, parents, and learners, contrasting with the previous system’s academic focus.
Furthermore, Mr. Abdalla revealed that the association has petitioned the President to increase capitation for primary schools and support the establishment of laboratories in institutions lacking them. He expressed gratitude to organizations such as KCB and the M-Pesa Foundation for their partnerships in renovating and improving school infrastructure.
In addition, Mr. Dan Aloo, the Executive Secretary of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kilindini Branch, commended the government for its ongoing support in implementing education reforms.
