Murang’a Governor, Irungu Kang’ata, has lauded Kenyans for maintaining peace before, during and after the hotly contested last year’s General Elections.
Addressing residents in Murang’a town, during New year’s celebrations, Kang’ata said the peaceful transitional process witnessed in the country after the August 9 polls, portrays maturity of our democratic ideals.
The Governor observed that in past general elections, the country used to experience either chaos or protracted demonstrations, but during the last general election, prayers helped Kenya to remain calm, even after presidential results were announced.
“We have every reason to thank God for a very smooth transition. There was not even a single fracas related to the elections,” said Kang’ata.
He appealed to the business community to redouble their efforts, saying the existing peace and tranquility within our borders, was of great benefit to the country’s economy.
The Governor further urged Murang’a residents to continue supporting the County Administration, to enable it deliver on their election pledges.
“I am working hard to achieve all that we promised during the campaigning period. Some of the pledges have already been attained and I request for your support in delivering our development agenda,” he pleaded.
The Governor further welcomed positive criticism from the opponents, saying the ruling Kenya Kwanza government is a democratic administration and will listen to diverse views from Kenyans.
“Our government is for everyone. If you see us not doing good, just voice your concern and it will be acted upon. We are democrats and willing to accommodate diverse views from the people we lead,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Kang’ata disclosed that the County Administration has listed several programmes in education, health and agriculture for implementation this year, including bursaries that will be extended to benefit even those in day secondary schools.
“After passing of the requisite policies by the County Assembly, mangoes, tea and coffee farmers will start getting subsidies to boost production,” he added.
