Kenya-Indian Navies In A Joint Venture

Kenyan and Indian navies are set to engage in joint maritime exercises at the coastal town of Mombasa ahead of celebration marking the 9th International Day of Yoga (IDY).

The Indian naval ship Trishul which is part of deployment to five African countries is expected to make a port call at Mombasa, Kenya from 26th to 29th May 2023, where marines from the two nations will engage in a wide range of professional interactions, deck visits and sports exchanges, aimed at enhancing cooperation and mutual understanding.

High Commissioner Her Excellency Namgya Khampa in a press release said the call at the port reflects India’s cordial ties with Kenya stretching back to the precolonial era.

She said the two navies are set to jointly participate in a Yoga session on the 27th May 2023, at Mtongwe Naval Base, as part of India’s celebrations this year, which is also being performed in numerous ports around the world to form an ‘Ocean Ring of Yoga’. The worldwide celebration is set for 21st June 2023.

INS Trishul is the second frigate of the Talwar class of Indian Navy. INS Trishul was commissioned into Indian Navy on 25 June 2003 and the Kenyan navy will have a rare opportunity to access some of the best warships.

The 3700 ton and 125 meters long vessel is fitted with state of art equipment and also incorporates stealth features and is equipped with a versatile array of weapons and sensors and can carry multi-role helicopters. It has top speed of 30 knots and an endurance of 30 days at sea.

The ship carries crew of 30 officers and 300 sailors
