Kajiado: The government has bolstered security as Kenya prepares to co-host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) beginning Sunday. Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama meeting in Kajiado County, Interior Cabinet Secretary Onesmus Murkomen stated that the Ministry has implemented a wide range of safety protocols to ensure adequate protection for both locals and international visitors.
According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen highlighted the installation of modern CCTV cameras for proper surveillance, increased police patrols, deployment of tourist police officers, and strengthened hotel security among other measures to ensure the safety of players, fans, and officials during the tournament. The CS further mentioned the activation of emergency response services, such as ambulances, for any emergency situation.
The CS pointed out that Nyayo Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, the main hosting venues for the tournament, are ready for the event. To avoid stampedes, Murkomen revealed the introduction of an online ticketing system and encouraged fans to arrive at the stadiums early to avoid long queues. Thorough checks will be conducted at entry points to prevent individuals from entering the stadiums with weapons or other restricted items.
Murkomen remarked that this is a historic moment for Kenya in hosting CHAN, aiding in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027. Special desks for football fans wanting to travel across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have been set up at immigration points to facilitate smooth travel arrangements. A special travel pass has also been introduced to speed up entry and exit for fans looking to enjoy all the matches in the region, with most regional travelers not needing a visa and some Caribbean visitors also being facilitated.
The CS encouraged Kenyans to be hospitable, attend the matches starting Sunday, and support the national team, Harambee Stars, to succeed in the tournament.
