Nairobi: Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that Kamariny Stadium, which is currently at 50 percent completion, is part of massive infrastructure and sports upgrade projects being undertaken by the National Government ahead of the 2026 Mashujaa Day celebrations. The national event will be co-hosted by Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Nandi counties, featuring a series of grassroots-to-intercounty activities under the theme of Security, Sports, and Finance.
According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen stated that the newly renovated Kamariny Stadium will serve as the premier venue for athletics, headlined by a competitive ten-kilometer race that will commence in Iten town to celebrate the facility’s completion. During an inspection tour of the infrastructure projects, Murkomen noted that while athletics will take center stage at Kamariny, Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Uasin Gishu will host the intercounty ball game finals on Mashujaa Day.
A special tournament involving teams from Elgeyo Marakwet, Baringo, and West Pokot will be staged in the Kerio Valley sub-county at Tot to specifically celebrate the significant gains made in security and peace in the region. Apart from sports, the co-hosting counties will feature cultural activities, a national economic conference, and a youth summit.
As part of the stadium’s ecosystem, the government is constructing hostels capable of housing up to 340 people along the scenic Kerio escarpment. Additionally, sports academies are being established in Marakwet West, Keiyo North, and South sub-counties to promote sports in the county.
Iten town is set to benefit from the construction of a county headquarters and twenty kilometers of newly constructed roads, with equivalent road networks being developed in each of the three co-hosting counties. The local academic landscape is poised for a significant transformation with the imminent launch of Tambach University, with the contractor already on-site to begin building the main administration block and lecture halls.
As construction progresses, the first batch of university students will temporarily be hosted at the adjacent Tambach Teachers Training College, with renovations currently underway. The State is also upgrading the local water supply project to the university and installing modern street lighting grids to ensure reliable utilities for the community.
Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich expressed satisfaction with the expected completion of Kamariny Stadium, stating that residents are happy to see the renovations taking place. Governor Rotich noted that the surrounding infrastructure upgrades will directly address security concerns and extend business hours, with modern street lighting and expanded road networks significantly promoting trade across the county.
