Kakamega: Kakamega County has disbursed a total of Sh149.3 million to support over 35,000 needy and vulnerable students across several schools in the county. Governor Fernandes Barasa announced this financial commitment during a launch event at Bukhungu Stadium, emphasizing the county’s dedication to ensuring that no child is deprived of education due to a lack of school fees.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Governor highlighted that the county had previously released Sh30 million last year and allocated an additional Sh56 million to support approximately 16,000 students in 68 county polytechnics. Furthermore, an extra 24 million shillings is slated for release before the end of the current financial year, demonstrating the county’s ongoing efforts to support education.
Governor Barasa also mentioned the county’s investment in early childhood education, with the construction of 29 new Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDE) and the finalization of 32 more centers. This initiative aims to enhance access to early childhood education across the region.
Additionally, the Governor addressed the challenge of students in colleges facing difficulties obtaining National Identity cards upon reaching the age of 18. He stated that the county government is collaborating with the registrar of persons and educational institutions to facilitate the registration process for these students.
