Kakamega: Kakamega County Government will set aside funds to support education and training of street children in various skills. This follows willingness from the street children who asked for support to go back to school with others asking for training and being equipped to start income-generating activities.
According to Kenya News Agency, County Secretary Lawrence Omuhaka emphasized the need for a structured approach in addressing the concerns of street children, encouraging collaboration between the county and national government. Omuhaka highlighted the importance of engaging street children and providing them with opportunities in technical institutions to acquire skills for societal integration.
He mentioned the vulnerability of street children and urged other stakeholders to collaborate with government entities for their reintegration into society. Omuhaka spoke during the launch of the Western Region Street Children Support Initiative at Approved School Grounds Kakamega, under the theme ‘Give a hand, change a life.’
Various non-governmental organizations in Kakamega, alongside police officers, have partnered in this initiative to support street children by facilitating their return to school and technical training institutions, as well as nurturing their talents.
The county police commander, Lucy Kananu, called on stakeholders to continue their support for street children to secure a positive future for them and subsequent generations. Kananu stressed the importance of considering the future prospects of street children, warning of generational impacts if their needs remain unaddressed.
