Over 150 Kajiado residents engaged in the transport sector will benefit from a driving programme sponsored by the county government.
The County Executive Committee Member (CECM) of Education and Vocational Training Jeremiah ole Ncharo said the three weeks driving sponsorship programme sought to decrease the number of road accidents in the county that result from untrained drivers.
“A lot of youth do not have driving licenses because they are not able to afford the ten thousand shillings fees required for the training. The training will enable the youth to learn driving skills and acquire driving licenses which will help them to earn an income and decrease the number road accidents,” said Ncharo.
He encouraged the youth to enroll for free vocational and technical courses at Olekasasi Training and Vocational Centre to create self-employment opportunities citing the lack of white collar jobs.
Nkaimurunya Ward Administrator Wilfred Ombasa said boda boda operators who have benefited from the driving sponsorship programme would acquire skills that would enable them to transition into driving vehicles.
“The driving sponsorship programme will provide boda boda operators with driving skills and a license so that they can earn more money driving both a boda boda and a vehicle,” said Ombasa.
The chairman of the boda boda association in Ongata Rongai town Alex Gitari has lauded the county government driving sponsorship programme for providing over 2000 boda boda operators in the county with driving skills.
