Kabartonjo: Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communications and the Digital Economy William Kabogo has launched a 106-kilometer fiber optic link aimed at enhancing internet connectivity in the remote areas of Baringo County.
According to Kenya News Agency, the launch took place in Kabartonjo town, marking the official commencement of internet services for Baringo North and Central Sub-Counties. Kabogo highlighted that the backbone link stretching from Emining-Marigat-Kabarnet-Kabartonjo is expected to significantly improve digital connectivity in a region that has struggled with inadequate voice and internet services since independence.
The event was attended by ICT Principal Secretary Eng. John Tanui, Governor Benjamin Cheboi, County Commissioner Stephen Kutwa, and Baringo North Member of Parliament Joseph Makilap, among other leaders. Kabogo emphasized that this initiative is a crucial step toward digital inclusion, urging the area to focus on rapidly expanding the fiber network, which is essential for economic growth and bridging the digital divide.
Kabogo encouraged the youth to seize the opportunities presented by improved internet access to enhance their economic prospects. He stated that internet connectivity is vital for young people as it provides employment opportunities and a source of income. Furthermore, the CS pointed out that enhanced connectivity will facilitate better access to public services across the county.
He expressed confidence in the Kenya Kwanza administration, noting its significant achievements in advancing the digital economy, a key driver of socio-economic development in the country. Principal Secretary Tanui mentioned that the department has already connected 46 public institutions to the internet, with plans to connect 186 more using a new model in collaboration with Kenya Power, targeting major towns and trading centers.
Tanui assured Baringo residents that the county would not be excluded from this transformative project. In his remarks, Makilap praised the government for investing in essential technology, often overlooked by residents, and advocated for extending internet connectivity to nearby higher learning institutions to support education.
