It was all smiles at Servant of the Poor Foundation, a home for the homeless on receiving donations that included mattresses, blankets, bed sheets, laundry materials and food stuffs from St. Vincent de Paul group.
The home was built by Sister Mary Musembi, a catholic nun, to cater for the poor and homeless people.
The visiting donor group affiliated to St. Veronica’s Parish Syokimau, Nairobi was led by the chairperson Millicent Awuor who equated Sister Musembi’s efforts to those of Mother Teresa. Awuor noted that Sister Musembi’s love for the needy in the society is a virtue to be emulated.
Awuor thus urged the government, charitable organisations and individual philanthropists to support the nun to enable her take care of the very many needy cases at the facility.
Sister Musembi said she constructed the home to accommodate needy people especially accident victims who are neglected by their families. Some victims are abandoned by their kin in hospitals after they fail to raise the required medical bills.
“The facility also offers home for people neglected by the society following birth deformities,” the nun added.
The facility has 20 people with mental challenges whose relatives could not be traced with the oldest being aged 95 and the youngest three years.
Seventy per cent of the people housed at the facility are bedridden and in need of immense care.
A clinical officer at Matuu Level IV hospital Ms Redempter Mutinda says most of the victims suffer from Cerebral palsy and multiple congenital malformations, besides head injuries due to accidents. Ms Mutinda works as a volunteer clinical officer at the facility.
Sister Musembi attended her formation studies in Spain as a Close heart Nun.
