Malava: Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration Kipchumba Murkomen has assured Kenyans that security has been enhanced in all areas where by-elections are being held. He stated that a heavy police presence has been deployed in regions where intelligence has indicated potential disruptions by organized groups intending to interfere with the voting process.

According to Kenya News Agency, Murkomen made these remarks at Malava KMTC after a meeting with top security officers from Kakamega County ahead of the upcoming Malava by-election. He expressed concern over the misuse of security officers by some VIPs, who have allegedly been associating with disruptive elements, thereby endangering the lives of citizens and electoral officials.

The Cabinet Secretary revealed that the National Police Service (NPS) has conducted investigations implicating some officers in planning meetings where violence is being orchestrated. He warned that officers found culpable would face disciplinary actions, emphasizing the importance of maintaining peace and order during the electoral process.

This statement follows complaints from Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Kakamega Senator Dr. Bonny Khalawale regarding the withdrawal of their security detail, which they claim has jeopardized their safety. Murkomen assured that security for law-abiding citizens, including leaders, is guaranteed, but warned that those engaging in violence would face legal consequences.

Accompanied by Principal Secretary for Interior Raymond Omollo, Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat of the National Police Service, and DIG Gilbert Masengeli of the Administration Police Service, Murkomen urged Kenyans to participate in the elections. He emphasized that the increased security measures are intended to protect citizens and not to instill fear.
