Technical University of Mombasa Vice Chancellor Prof. Laila Abubakar has decried the poor standards of education in Tana River County.
Professor Abubakar, a member of the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms made the remarks during a public participation forum on education reforms in Hola where he also challenged stakeholders to work out ways of improving the performance of the region in national examinations
“In fact, something that I am very sad about is the state of education here in Tana River. I would like to emphasize and advise all parents and education stakeholders to try to work hard so that we can improve our education standards,’’ said Prof. Abubakar.
She added that education was a right for every Kenyan child according to the constitution besides the need to seek knowledge being emphasized in the Holy books.
She quoted a prophetic saying from the Holy Qur’an: ‘The one who is knowledgeable is not equal to the one who lacks knowledge.’
Laila advised parents to be involved in their children’s education and desist from entirely abdicating the responsibility to teachers.
She promised to return to Tana River to hold talks with teachers and to provide mentorship programmes for the county to be an academic giant too.
On his part, Tana River County Commissioner Thomas Sankei said he will organize a consultative forum with education stakeholders to come up with solutions on how to improve education standards.
