Busia: The ICT Authority has spearheaded an awareness training initiative on e-waste management and disposal for government stakeholders in Busia, aiming to foster environmentally friendly disposal practices.
According to Kenya News Agency, Stephen Otieno, an officer at the ICT Authority, highlighted the significance of the training during a session at the Busia County commissioner’s conference hall. The goal is to ensure efficient and amicable disposal and management of e-waste. Otieno emphasized that e-waste contributes to 25% of environmental pollution, with the impact being more pronounced in third-world countries due to a lack of awareness. The training is expected to empower stakeholders to disseminate information on effective e-waste management to the public.
Otieno disclosed that the Authority has already received over 2,000 pieces of equipment from stakeholders, with some devices refurbished, repaired, and disposed of. He noted the ongoing reception of e-waste and its effective management, reiterating the need for increased sensitization to enhance awareness among the populace.
Furthermore, Otieno advocated for the establishment of central collection points across counties to facilitate efficient e-waste management. By coordinating with county governments, these collection points would serve as temporary storage for devices before they are transferred to the ICT Authority.
Cliff Barkatch, Busia County Director of Environment (NEMA), commented on the adverse effects of improperly disposed e-waste on human health and the environment. He emphasized the responsibility of e-waste producers to ensure waste separation at the source and adherence to a custody chain involving licensed producers, transporters, and recyclers.
Barkatch also underscored the importance of setting up collection centers nationwide to tackle e-waste management challenges effectively. He called for addressing transportation concerns, often borne by stakeholders, to streamline the process.
Stakeholders, led by Teso South Deputy County Commissioner John Kichwen, echoed the need for more awareness training sessions to enhance public understanding of e-waste management’s importance. Kichwen advocated for collaboration between the ICT Authority and other departments to establish efficient e-waste collection systems, thereby safeguarding the environment.
