Lecturers from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT)’s College of Human Resource Development (COHRED) have completed a two-week, Start and Improve your Business Programme (SYIB)-International Labour Organization (ILO).
The program, facilitated by the Institute of Certified SIYB Trainers Africa (ICSTA) equipped the 14 lecturer participants with the requisite enterprise management skills to start and manage small businesses.
The training which was held between 15-26 August 2022, is geared toward individuals who wish to tap into their entrepreneurial potential with a focus on starting and improving small businesses as a strategy for creating more and better employment.
Speaking during the closing ceremony, Dean, School of Business and Entrepreneurship (SOBE), Prof. Florence Memba said the training was timely and would ensure the dons fine-tune their teaching to meet the demands of the dynamic business world.
“This training will be important in imparting crucial skills to our staff thus ensuring we continue to set the bar high in terms of providing top-notch entrepreneurship courses in the University,” Prof. Memba affirmed.
With SIYB-ILO being one of the biggest global management systems used for the support of micro and small enterprises (MSEs) currently in the market, she exuded confidence in its viability in enhancing scholars and practicing entrepreneurs’ expertise in problem solving.
Prof. Memba also lauded the training for putting JKUAT on another level in terms of upskilling its staff to the highest standards possible, further noting, partnering with such institutions is in tandem with its vision and mission of the being the best in the business.
On his part, ICSTA Master Trainer, Mr. Geoffrey Kilonzo said there is a tremendous opportunity for higher learning institutions especially JKUAT in equipping its students with necessary skillset for the world of business through embedding such trainings in their curriculum.
He further urged the participants to ensure they propagate the training to their colleagues to ensure others benefit from the same, saying SYIB is a unique programme and is a possible pathway to creation of jobs.
“On the business front you are fully equipped. However, I beseech you to implement your action plan as early as possible and ensure you consistently train to be master trainers in the future,” Mr. Kilonzo advised.
The participants applauded the trainers for their astute mastery of the concepts in entrepreneurship and pledged to use the knowledge gained to change other people’s lives and also apply the same in their teaching.
The participants were taken through the various SIYB modules; Record Keeping, Marketing, People Management, among others.
