Governor Wanga Launches Girl Child Mentorship Programme

Homa Bay County Governor Gladys Wanga has launched a mentorship aimed at empowering the girls in the county Speaking during the launch of the programme at Asumbi Girls School, Wanga said that the girls who will be selected for the programme will be expected to share the information they received with the rest of girls in their schools. Wanga said the programme was not for the girls only but also for their mothers and fathers, adding that the boys’ edition was expected to be launched this coming September. She commended Asumbi Girls School for the good results they posted in last year’s exams. ‘No barrier is too high to jump to be successful and to get to where we want to be in life because education is the greatest equaliser,’ the Governor said. Rangwe legislator Dr Lilian Gogo told the girls being mentored by the governor to be role models. She challenged teachers to be good mentors in the lives of the learners and called for measures to fight teenage pregnancies by all means. Kenya Secondary Heads Association County Chair Bula Dickens, said it was important to consider mentoring the boys also because they have always been neglected. He said the boys have several challenges and the programmes will help them achieve their dreams. ‘Both the girl child and the boy child programmes must impact positively in their lives by being mentored in all areas,’ Bula said.
