Migori: Migori County Commissioner Kisilu Mutua and Governor Ochilo Ayacko have condemned the continued acts of female genital mutilation (FGM) among the Kuria community. Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebration at Kadika Primary School in Suna East Sub-county, Kisilu emphasized that while the rest of the country celebrates its rich traditions and positive cultures, the Kuria community continues to practice an outdated tradition of FGM that harms girls and impoverishes the community’s ethics and morals.

According to Kenya News Agency, Kisilu urged Migori residents to join the rest of the Nyanza region as the county prepares to host the first-ever Piny Luo Festival. This event aims to encourage the community to witness, learn, and embrace positive cultures that can enhance the social and economic activities of the Migori people. The Piny Luo Festival, scheduled to take place at Rongo University from December 15th to 17th, 2025, will showcase Luo music, dance, art, cuisine, and exhibitions highlighting both
traditional and contemporary expressions of Luo culture.

Migori Governor Ochilo Ayacko encouraged the younger generation to embrace positive cultures and traditions, which can help them connect with their historical roots and generate income. He urged the youth, particularly in Kuria, to resist pressures to engage in retrogressive practices like FGM, which can obstruct their educational paths, harm their health, and expose them to negative societal issues such as early marriages and gender-based violence.

Governor Ochilo also extended an invitation to Kenyans and visitors to participate in the Piny Luo Festival, which aims to unite the Luo community in preserving cultural identity, promoting unity, and showcasing the richness of Luo heritage. He highlighted the tourist attractions in Migori, including Osiri Mines, Migingo Island, and Thimlich Ohinga, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encouraging visitors to explore these sites during the festival.
