Kakamega: Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa on Monday inspected the resumption of construction at the Kakamega Level Six Hospital, which had stalled in 2021. During the inspection, Governor Barasa assured residents that the county government, in collaboration with the National Government, will ensure the facility is completed within nine months.
According to Kenya News Agency, the county government had previously invested over Sh2.6 billion in the construction of the hospital before work was halted by the former contractor. A new contractor, Plumbing Systems, has now taken over, with President William Ruto committing Sh1 billion to expedite the construction efforts.
Governor Barasa emphasized the county government’s commitment to resolving Sh350 million in pending bills owed to the previous contractor. He stated, “The previous contractor did some submissions of pending bills of almost Sh350 million which we are doing evaluation because we can’t just pay bills before doing evaluations. Once the evaluations have been done and verified, then definitely we will be moving to pay.”
The governor highlighted an agreement with the former contractor to separate pending bills from the remaining work. He emphasized that this issue would not obstruct progress, as the current contractor continues to address the unfinished work.
The governor also noted that the contractor has already deployed over 200 workers and is prepared to increase this number to ensure the project is completed within the designated timeline.
