Matungu: The Government has been urged to fully and firmly enforce the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes law to address the issue of online harassment targeting women. This call to action comes amidst growing concerns about the misuse of digital platforms for predatory activities.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Director of the Network for Research and Governance (NRG), Paul Odongo, emphasized the importance of caution and responsible use of the digital space, particularly by youth and women. He spoke to the press during the commemoration of 16 days of activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Matungu. Odongo highlighted the dual nature of the digital space, acknowledging both its risks and the opportunities it presents.
Odongo pointed out that some individuals exploit the expanded digital space to target and prey on vulnerable women, using tools like dating apps and social media platforms to lure them. His comments were made on the sidelines of a training program organized by Haki Ni Yetu, a non-governmental organization, in partnership with Inform Action. This initiative aims to educate women and youth on the responsible use of digital platforms.
Additionally, Anastacia Munyengo, Director of the Matungu Social Justice Centre, called for legal measures to be taken against cybercrime perpetrators, reinforcing the need for stringent enforcement of existing laws to protect women from online exploitation.
