Nairobi: The government has announced measures to enhance security and protect key infrastructure and equipment during the construction of the Sh200B Rironi-Mau Summit Road, which is expected to be completed by June next year. The plan includes boosting security personnel along key routes along the expressway to ease traffic flow within the road diversion routes that will be provided.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and Coordination of the National Government, Kipchumba Murkomen, stated that the road, which will be financed through a public-private partnership, has already commenced construction. Speaking during a development tour in Naivasha, Murkomen emphasized the project’s transformative potential in opening up the region and addressing perennial traffic congestion on the highway.
Murkomen added that security personnel will work around the clock to ensure safety on alternative routes during the construction period and the upcoming World Safari Rally championship next month. Local youths, women, and the business community are set to benefit from job opportunities created during the year-long construction phase.
Additionally, Naivasha and Mai Mahiu towns are expected to experience significant growth as the highway passes through them, promising seamless travel for visitors attending conferences and tourists camping around Lake Naivasha. Murkomen also announced the resumption of construction for the Naivasha Sub-County’s stalled administrative offices, with funding of Sh50 million approved by the National Treasury.
The Ministry has partnered with the Ministry of Housing to initiate the construction of housing for police officers in the area, addressing the housing shortages faced by officers. This announcement follows the government’s decision to establish a new special unit to tackle rising crime, increased drug abuse, and criminal gangs within the Nairobi metropolitan area.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Police Unit will collaborate with local businesses, utilizing modern cameras and Artificial Intelligence to enhance security measures. Designed based on global best practices, this special unit will serve as a model for deployment in cities across the country.
Murkomen also called on political leaders to engage with security apparatus to minimize chaos during political rallies. Recent political unrest, particularly affecting the opposition, has been a concern as political temperatures rise ahead of the 2027 General Elections. Referring to the chaos in Kitengela during an ODM political meeting, Murkomen criticized leaders for not coordinating with security officers and condemned the use of hired goons. Investigations are underway to address the disruption and loss of life in Kitengela.
