Homa bay: Sections of the business community in Homa Bay town have been urged to vacate road reserves to pave way for the expansion of the town’s main highway. Area County Commissioner (CC) Ronald Mwiwawi stated that traders who have encroached on road reserves are causing inconvenience to the contractor and delaying construction works. He also asked motorists to avoid parking in unauthorized areas where the project is underway. “We are concerned that some motorists, especially matatus, are parking their vehicles on the road construction spaces, thus delaying the progress of the project,” Mwiwawi said.
According to Kenya News Agency, the administrator briefed the media in his office, highlighting that the project is expected to ease traffic congestion in Homa Bay town and spur economic growth. The project connects from the Arujo area to the central business district (CBD) of the town and extends to Rangwena along Kendu Bay highway. Mwiwawi mentioned that phase one of the project is currently at 76 percent completion and is anticipated to be finished by May this year, with phase two slated for completion by November.
Mwiwawi emphasized that besides easing traffic congestion, the project would contribute to the beautification of the town. He added that the project also connects to the newly rehabilitated Homa Bay Pier to boost the blue economy. The CC noted that in addition to the road expansion project, over 400 kilometers of roads across the county are being upgraded to bitumen standards. These projects aim to unlock the tourism potential and enhance the blue economy in the county.
“We are opening up the islands in Lake Victoria to boost tourism and fisheries,” Mwiwawi explained, citing Rusinga Island, which now boasts a 19.7-kilometer tarmac ring road. He stressed the importance of enhanced security for development to be realized and issued a stern warning against the use of goons as the country approaches next year’s elections. “We will deal firmly against criminal gangs locally referred to as Sangwenyas,” he declared.
