Government Launches Solar Mini-Grid Initiative in Isiolo to Boost Energy Access

Nairobi: The government has initiated a solar mini-grid programme aimed at enhancing electricity access for residents in remote and off-grid areas of Isiolo County. This effort is part of a broader strategy to promote clean and affordable energy nationwide.

According to Kenya News Agency, the first phase of the programme was inaugurated at Kipsing in Oldonyiro Sub-County, benefiting over 2,400 residents with reliable electricity for the first time. The project was commissioned by Alex Wachira, Principal Secretary in the State Department for Energy. He announced that the national government has allocated Sh9.6 billion for constructing 114 solar mini-grids across 14 counties.

Wachira emphasized the initiative’s goal to bridge the electricity access gap in isolated regions outside the national grid. The programme aims to improve livelihoods and stimulate economic growth in marginalized areas. Households in the targeted areas will be required to pay only Sh1,000 for electricity connections, making power more affordable and accessible.

He stated, “This programme is aimed at ensuring that communities living in remote areas are not left behind in accessing electricity and economic opportunities associated with reliable power supply.”

Ibrahim Hassan Guyo indicated that the County Government would support vulnerable families who cannot afford the connection fees under the six mini-grid projects planned in Isiolo County. Isiolo Woman Representative Mumina Bonaya praised the project, calling it transformative for residents who have long awaited electricity access. She highlighted that it would enhance business activities, learning opportunities, and community security.

Residents expressed optimism about the programme’s potential to create employment opportunities and improve living standards. Christine Lina, a local resident, noted that electricity would help traders expand power-dependent businesses and improve security through street lighting. Another resident, Joseph Lepakio, mentioned that charging mobile phones, a significant challenge, would now be easier. Gitule Lemantile highlighted the educational benefits for children, while Nicholas Lemojo remarked on the project’s potential to uplift living conditions and stimulate local commerce.

The solar mini-grid initiative is part of the government’s comprehensive strategy to increase sustainable and affordable energy access for rural communities across the country.
