Nairobi: The government remains committed to transforming lives in West Pokot County through several ongoing development projects. These projects aim to promote self-reliance among the local residents, focusing on crucial sectors like water and agriculture.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA), in collaboration with other development partners, has invested significantly in the North Rift region. During a recent development assessment tour, Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASALs) and Regional Development Principal Secretary Kello Harsama highlighted the government’s efforts to shift the focus from security operations to development initiatives. Harsama noted that essential services such as obtaining Identification Cards have become more accessible, reflecting the positive changes in the region.
The government, through KVDA, has initiated 32 water projects in the county with a total investment of Sh800 million. These initiatives aim to empower the community by providing access to water resources for irrigation and household use. Harsama announced the commissioning of several boreholes and irrigation projects, emphasizing the role of water as a key enabler of development. He also mentioned plans to supply 70 generators to further support water pumping for domestic and agricultural needs.
In addition to water projects, the government has launched a restocking program, providing over 2,700 goats to 104 households across five constituencies. This initiative aims to enhance the resilience of the residents against the challenges posed by droughts and water scarcity.
The Wei-Wei Irrigation Scheme is another significant project, where the government has invested over Sh1 billion. This scheme supports 600 families in cultivating over 1,000 acres, promoting sustainable agricultural practices and providing income opportunities. To further support local farmers, the government has cleared a Sh57 million debt owed by farmers under the scheme.
Plans are underway to open up 1,000 acres of farmland along the River Turkwel to empower the Pokot and Turkana communities. This project is expected to benefit over 700 community members by providing irrigation solutions and sustainable income sources.
KVDA Managing Director Sammy Naporos encouraged residents to leverage the mango tree nursery at Sigor and the honey processing factory to diversify their agricultural practices. KVDA’s efforts in promoting commercial opportunities, such as mango and honey production, have been well-received by local farmers.
Sigor Member of Parliament Peter Lochokopong praised the government’s efforts in addressing the needs of the West Pokot community. He emphasized the importance of water projects in improving daily lives and enhancing agricultural productivity.
Residents and leaders have shown support for KVDA’s initiatives, urging the national government to allocate more resources to the authority. They also expressed concerns over proposals to disband Regional Development Authorities (RDAs), emphasizing their vital role in addressing marginalization and promoting uniform development across the country.
