Kisii: Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has reiterated the government’s commitment to finding lasting solutions to school unrests across the country. Speaking during the Prize Giving Day at Gianchere Friends Senior School in Kisii Central Sub-County in Kisii County, CS Ogamba said the multi-sectoral team involving various education stakeholders had been formed to address the challenges facing the sector.
According to Kenya News Agency, Ogamba noted that the multi-sectoral team will include parents, teachers, students, unions, and other key stakeholders to ensure the development of policies to address grievances in schools. The move has been necessitated by the rising cases of unrest in schools, which led to the death of 16 learners at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil last month.
The Education Cabinet Secretary expressed that the government would not condone the wave of unrest and indiscipline cases in schools that have led to deaths and destruction of property. He urged parents and teachers to play an active role in guiding learners to remain focused on achieving their academic goals.
Ogamba also encouraged students to work hard and maintain discipline throughout their studies, emphasizing that education remains the greatest equalizer, offering an opportunity for learners to reach their full potential. Nyaribari Chache Member of Parliament Zaheer Jhanda thanked the Education CS for attending the occasion and urged leaders in the Gusii region to continue working together to promote development in the region.
MP Jhanda, who donated foodstuffs and beddings to the school, also called on the government to continue supporting the school through the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF). Ogamba was accompanied by other leaders from the county, including Kisii Deputy Governor Elijah Obebo, Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Aburi, and Nominated Senator Essy Okenyuri, among others.
