Government Allocates Sh5.4 Billion for Kakamega Affordable Housing Phase II

Kakamega: The National Government has initiated the second phase of the Affordable Housing Project (AHP) in Kakamega town, with an anticipated cost of Sh5.4 billion. This phase aims to construct 1,891 housing units, following the completion of the first phase consisting of 220 units at Milimani Estate in Lurambi Constituency.

According to Kenya News Agency, the project is managed by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development and will be situated on an 18-acre plot. It will feature an Early Childhood Education (ECDE) center, a school, a playfield, 22 commercial stalls, and other social amenities. During site inspections, officials from the Executive Office of the President and the Western Regional Implementation and Delivery team, led by Western Regional Commissioner Macharia Irungu, reviewed the project’s plans, which categorize housing units based on income levels to accommodate individual preferences.

The social tier of the project will include 392 units, comprising 77 one-bedroom, 210 two-bedroom, and 105 three-bedroom units, primarily targeting low-income earners and slum dwellers. The affordable units will consist of 947 units, including 238 studio, 512 two-bedroom, and 197 three-bedroom units, designed to provide safe and cost-effective homes for public servants and middle-income earners. Additionally, the market units will feature 552 units, evenly split between two-bedroom and three-bedroom configurations.

The construction, launched in September 2023, is scheduled to take 36 months, with a projected completion date of December 5, 2028. The first phase, the Milimani Affordable Housing Project, was completed at a cost of Sh472 million and is now ready for occupancy.

Earlier, a regional retreat focused on aligning the efforts of National Government Administration officers, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies within the Western region. At this forum, Commissioner Irungu encouraged civil servants to support and expedite project implementations under a unified government approach. He highlighted the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), aimed at promoting inclusive growth by prioritizing investments among small-scale farmers and low-income households.
