Nandi: The Nandi County Government, in partnership with Eastern Produce Kenya (EPK) Tea Company, has inaugurated a gender-based violence and mental health clinic at Nandi Hills County Hospital. This facility will serve as a referral center for the region.
According to Kenya News Agency, the clinic was constructed and equipped by EPK Tea Company with support from Taylors of Harrogate and Infre Sa. It aims to address the increasing cases of gender-based violence and mental health issues, marking a significant advancement in healthcare delivery.
During the inauguration event, Noel Smith, Eastern Produce Kenya Tea Company’s Nandi Operations Manager, emphasized the importance of the clinic for the Nandi community. He stated that it would enhance protection and restoration efforts, providing a dedicated space for the care of gender-based violence victims and supporting their healing journey. Smith highlighted the ongoing impact of gender-based violence across Kenya, which extends beyond physical harm.
Nandi County Secretary Dr. Francis Sang praised EPK for their support, noting that the clinic symbolizes hope, dignity, and protection for vulnerable community members. Dr. Sang stressed the importance of corporate social responsibility and encouraged stakeholders to continue initiatives that benefit the community.
Dr. Sang also addressed the issue of stigma and lack of support that prevents many from seeking help. He commended EPK’s commitment to improving health and well-being, urging the community to utilize the clinic’s services.
County Executive Committee Member for Health Angeline Kirui encouraged those experiencing mental health issues to seek assistance at the clinic. She acknowledged EPK’s role in bringing the idea to fruition and highlighted the significant link between gender-based violence and mental health problems.
Nandi East Sub County Police Commander Jeremiah Leariwala discussed the societal challenge of gender-based violence and advised against resolving such cases in informal settings like kangaroo courts. He called for collaboration between the health sector and police to ensure timely information sharing, advocating for justice for victims.
The new clinic is expected to provide comprehensive services, including medical care, psychological support, and referral services, in a compassionate and confidential environment.
