A section of immigrants from Wajir and Mandera counties who left their homes in search of water and pasture for their livestock have a reason to smile after local non-governmental organizations in Garissa County teamed up to provide them with water and assorted foodstuffs to quench their thirst and hunger. While commemorating the NGOs week in Garissa today, Regional Manager for the NGOs Coordination Board Joseph Mutemi called on the NGOs to continue supporting the persons affected by drought through provision of relief food and cash transfer programs. Garissa CECM for Gender Hawa Abdisahal called on donors to chip in and offer assistance especially to the women and children who are most affected. ‘These are our brothers and sisters who need our help in terms of food and water to survive. As a county government, we have welcomed them and we will help them where we can,’ Abdisahal said. ‘We want to also ask the national government through the State Department for Arid and Semi-Arid Lands to see how they can help these people even as the holy month of Ramadhan approaches,’ she added. Chairman of Al Ihsan Peace and Development Mr. Abdisalam Sheikh expressed gratitude celebrating NGO’s week and partnering with other NGOs to provide assistance to the internally displaced persons as a result of the ongoing drought. ‘The people in El-adhe are still lacking the basic needs and thus I plead with the government and donors to help provide food and water to our brothers here,’ Sheikh said.
