About 37 families were today left homeless in Likii informal settlement, Nanyuki after fire razed down their houses.
The inferno is believed to have emanated from one of the houses and quickly spread to others, however, the main cause is yet to be established.
Speaking to the media, Monica Wanjiku, a victim said that they were away when the fire that has left them homeless started.
“We had just left the house to visit a patient in hospital when the fire started and when we saw that, we came back. I have never seen such an incident in my life,” said Wanjiku.
She appealed to well-wishers to help the victims to restart their lives noting the majority were going through hard times due to the high cost of living.
“Many people have been affected, school going kids have nowhere to stay amid tough times, my request is that all the victims be supported,” she added.
Winfred Gaturi, a resident, said that she was informed from where she worked that fire had occurred in their area and rushed only to find the houses engulfed in the inferno.
Nturukuma location Chief Martin Kariuki Rienye, confirming the incident said that those affected by the inferno had rented the houses in the area and they didn’t manage to salvage anything.
“Three plots have been razed down by fire and about 37 families living here, their properties have been destroyed and now they are left with nothing. It’s a very devastating situation,” said the area chief, adding that the county government fire rescue team was very responsive when he called them to contain the fire situation.
He further pointed out that the government will find ways to help the affected families.
During the fire incident no casualties were reported and investigation is ongoing to establish the cause.
