Ethiopia Reiterates Commitment to Realization of LAPSSET Vision

The three-day meeting that runs from May 17–19, 2023, is expected to come with an outcome document that aims at accelerating the Regional LAPSSET Corridor project implementation.

Ethiopian high level delegation led by State Minister of Finance, Dr. Eyob Tekalign is participating at the High-Level Meeting.

The High-Level Meeting brought together government delegates, business communities, development partners, and civil society organizations.

The meeting was hosted by the Ministry of Transport of the Republic of South Sudan in collaboration with the UNECA, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

During the occasion, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Finance Dr. Eyob Tekalign made remarks emphasizing the importance of the LAPSSET project in enhancing economic cooperation and regional integration among the three countries.

He also reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to the realization of the LAPSSET vision.

Vice President of South Sudan and chairman of the infrastructure cluster, Taban Deng Gai, Kipchumba Murkomen EGH, Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Transport of Kenya; high-level government officials; and UNECA representatives also delivered their remarks on the project.

LAPSSET project consists of seven key infrastructure projects starting with a new 32 Berth port at Lamu (Kenya); Interregional Highways from Lamu to Isiolo, Isiolo to Juba (South Sudan), Isiolo to Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and Lamu to Garsen (Kenya).

It also includes Crude Oil Pipeline from Lamu to Isiolo, Isiolo to Juba; Product Oil Pipeline from Lamu to Isiolo, Isiolo to Addis Ababa; Interregional Standard Gauge Railway lines from Lamu to Isiolo, Isiolo to Juba, Isiolo to Addis Ababa, and Nairobi to Isiolo.

The project is also consists of 3 International Airports: one each at Lamu, Isiolo, and Lake Turkana; 3 Resort Cities: one each at Lamu, Isiolo and Lake Turkana; and The multipurpose High Grand Falls Dam along the Tana River.
