Nairobi: The Vihiga County Environment Committee (CEC), which holds the legal responsibility for overseeing environmental issues within the county, convened its quarterly meeting on Monday to evaluate the advancements made in the environment sector.

According to Kenya News Agency, the two-day session took place at Sosa Cottages in Gisambai Ward and was presided over by Dr. Jairus Amayi, the County Executive Committee Member for Environment, Water, Energy, Natural Resources, and Climate Change. The meeting aimed not only to review progress but also to pinpoint emerging challenges that necessitate intervention.

The committee engaged in a series of field visits as part of the meeting. These visits were intended to assess the current state of various sectors, including the extractive and mining industries, waste management, public infrastructure, sanitation, and climate change interventions.

The committee also evaluated the effects of ongoing climate resilience projects and other environmental initiatives throughout the county. Key sites visited included the Chambiti PlanetGold mercury-free gold processing centre, Jeblebuk Quarry, Ebuyangu landfill, Ebusiekwe Apiary, Ipali Water Project, Buhani Irrigation Scheme, and the South Maragoli Honey Processing Project.

These visits allowed the committee to document both challenges and opportunities, which are crucial for enhancing sustainable environmental management.
