An education official has applauded the Prisons’ adult literacy plan, where inmates in Isiolo County are given an opportunity to improve their ability to read and write.
The County Director of Education James Nyaga said that adult learning in the correctional institution has seen a number of inmates transit from primary to secondary level and even to university stage.
He urged inmates to take advantage of the available teachers and learning facilities to advance their education levels, even while they are behind bars so that they may move from Prison with diverse knowledge and skills.
Mr. Nyaga was speaking during the commemoration of the International Literacy Day at Shambani Primary’s adult literacy center.
The education director called upon residents who live in remote areas to ensure they take their children to school and take an early advantage of studying instead of waiting to enroll in adult classes.
During the occasion, Isiolo Sub-County Adult Education Officer Ms. Joseline Gakii revealed that Isiolo County has an illiteracy level of 62 per cent and urged more learners to enroll in large numbers so as to avert the bad trend.
Ms. Gakii said that her department had enrolled 1320 learners who include 870 and 450 women and men of which only 11 will sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in November.
She appealed to the government to hire more instructors to enable the department to cope with the high number of learners across the vast county.
She also challenged the men in the county to join the adult classes so that they could change their way of living in the contemporary society, which is getting dominated by the learned citizens in all spheres of life.
