Education stakeholders in Makueni should work together with the government in ensuring there is a 100 percent transition for learners to grade seven in Junior Secondary School (JSS), Makueni Sub-County Director of Education Yophes Magara has said.
Speaking at Malivani AIC boarding primary school in Makueni when he monitored the first reporting day of JSS, Magara said the government will work together with parents, guardians and leaders to achieve 100% transition.
“So far, the reporting in the sub-county has been very impressive and it is my belief that by the end of this week we should have gotten 100 percent transition,” said Magara.
“It is going to be a responsibility for all of us, including the parents and the leaders, to ensure that every candidate who sat for assessment at grade six transit to grade seven,” noted Magara.
“We approved most of the schools and those few that we did not approve are schools which had very low enrolment, as low as seven. And on top of that, these schools did not have corresponding infrastructure to support junior secondary school,” noted Magara.
Consequently, he urged parents who had students in the unapproved schools to register them in the neighbouring schools.
He said the government was prepared and committed to ensuring a conducive environment for grade seven learners by employing teachers and providing learning materials and resources for expanding infrastructure in the public schools.
“We have received learning material (books) for grade seven, and we have asked the school heads or the principals to come for those books so that they are able to use them in teaching these learners,” added Magara.
Malivani AIC boarding primary school head-teacher Joshua Mutuse said they had so far admitted 51 students but were expecting a total of 120 students for both day and boarding sections.
“We have allocated three classrooms for JSS with enough lockers for expected 120 learners, each classroom will accommodate 40 students. Also, we have an equipped science laboratory and an ICT computer lab with 25 computers and a functional Wi Fi,” added Mutuse.
A spot check done by KNA in Premise academy, ACK boarding primary school and Unoa primary school showed a smooth process of reporting.
