Dawoodi Bohra Community Commits Sh200 Million for Likoni Hospital Revamp

Mombasa: The Dawoodi Bohra community has pledged Sh200 million for the revamping of Likoni Level 4 Hospital to improve access to healthcare and ease congestion at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital (CGTRH). Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir made the announcement while presiding over the laying of the foundation stone at the facility, accompanied by representatives of the Dawoodi Bohra Community.

According to Kenya News Agency, the Governor expressed concern over the hospital’s inability to handle the increasing number of patients, resulting in many being referred for specialized care across the Likoni ferry. The redevelopment plan includes the construction of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), a High Dependency Unit (HDU), multiple operating theaters, MRI and imaging services, and a maternity wing.

The Governor stated that the project is expected to be completed within one year, after which he plans to invite His Holiness Sayyidina Mufaddal Sayfuddin to personally inaugurate the facility. He emphasized the significance of naming the facility after His Holiness, highlighting the impact the Bohra community has had on the local community in Mombasa.

In addition to the Bohra-funded redevelopment, a modern maternity unit is being constructed at the same site through a partnership with Safaricom Foundation. The county is also concurrently building or upgrading hospitals in Kongowea, Port Reitz, Mikindani, Bofu, Mjambere, and Kisauni, with plans to expand CGTRH.

Governor Nassir announced that the County Government will cover the cost of the Taifa care medical cover administered by the Social Health Authority for all patients at county facilities, offering free healthcare for children under five, including surgeries. He emphasized that healthcare should be a right for every person in Mombasa.

The Governor also revealed plans for full digitalization of patient management across all county hospitals, eliminating paper prescriptions and manual queuing. He highlighted the importance of changing attitudes towards government-provided medicine and announced that Community Health Promoters in the county would receive competitive salaries and insurance coverage, marking a first in the country.

Likoni Member of Parliament Mishi Mboko praised the Governor’s achievements, encouraging residents to evaluate their leader based on his actions. She commended the partnership model pursued by the Governor to address funding gaps, particularly his collaboration with Safaricom and other partners to initiate modern maternity initiatives.
