Daadab: Thousands of refugees in the Daadab camp have raised urgent pleas to both the National and Garissa County governments for immediate food and water supplies, stating that they are facing severe starvation.
According to Kenya News Agency, the refugees have expressed that during the middle of the Ramadhan period, they struggle to afford essential meals such as Suhur, the morning meal before fasting, and Iftar, the evening meal to break their fast. Water scarcity has further exacerbated their plight, prompting a desperate appeal to leaders for swift intervention to prevent further deterioration of their situation.
Sheikh Farah, a representative of the refugees, emphasized the critical condition of the most vulnerable groups within the camp, including expectant mothers, the disabled, and orphans. He called upon Garissa Governor Nathif Jama, Senator Abdul Mohamed Haji, and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) to urgently address the pressing needs of the Muslim population residing in the Daadab refugee camp in Garissa County.
Additionally, the refugees have urged other regional leaders, such as Members of Parliament, the area’s Women Representative, and Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, as well as UN humanitarian agencies, to provide assistance.
Efforts to reach local National Government representatives and officials responsible for refugee welfare have been unsuccessful, as attempts to contact them via phone were unresponsive. As of June 30, 2024, online sources reported that the Daadab refugee camp hosts 383,048 refugees and asylum seekers, highlighting the magnitude of the humanitarian challenge faced by the camp’s residents.
