CS Wandayi Commissions Mt. Elgon Last Mile Connectivity Project

Bungoma: Energy and Petroleum CS, Opiyo Wandayi, has commissioned the Last Mile Connectivity Project in Kamachei and Chesikaki Wards, Mt. Elgon Constituency, Bungoma County, marking a significant step toward expanding electricity access in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, Wandayi was accompanied by the area Member of Parliament, Fred Kapondi, the County Deputy Governor, Janepher Mbatiany, who represented Governor Kenneth Lusaka, and Chesikaki Member of County Assembly Jacob Psero. During the commissioning ceremony, the CS reaffirmed the national government’s commitment to achieving universal access to electricity, emphasizing that the Last Mile Connectivity programme is fundamental for driving grassroots socio-economic development.

The CS highlighted that expanded electricity access will stimulate small and medium enterprises, improve learning conditions in schools, enhance security, and uplift living standards in rural communities. MP Kapondi echoed these sentiments, describing the project as transformative for Mt. Elgon Constituency, noting that reliable electricity will unlock economic potential, particularly for youth and women involved in small-scale businesses, and expressing gratitude to the national government for prioritizing the constituency in the electrification rollout.

Deputy Governor Mbatiany reiterated the county government’s support for national development programmes, stating that improved power connectivity will promote value addition in agriculture and attract local investment. Chesikaki MCA Jacob Psero urged residents to safeguard Kenya Power Company infrastructure to ensure sustainability and continued service delivery.

James Kiprop, a small-scale businessman in the area, praised the project and thanked the MP for his efforts in advocating for improved electricity connectivity, indicating that reliable power would enable traders to expand their operations and reduce reliance on costly alternative energy sources.

The Last Mile Connectivity Project is part of the government’s broader strategy aimed at achieving universal household electricity access and fostering inclusive economic growth across the country.
