Bungoma: Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Cabinet Secretary (CS), Dr. Deborah Barasa, led the community, partners, and Ministry staff in a mass tree planting exercise to mark the inaugural Mount Elgon Day 2025 at Kaboywo Kongit forest block in Bungoma County.
According to Kenya News Agency, Dr. Barasa was accompanied by Principal Secretaries Mr. Gitonga Mugambi (Forestry) and Mr. Harry Kimtai (Mining), as well as the Patron of the Mt. Elgon Restoration Initiative. The initiative is aimed at restoring the Mount Elgon ecosystem, recognized as one of Kenya’s five major water towers.
The restoration initiative is focused on rehabilitating over 103,000 hectares of degraded forest and farmland across Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties. This effort supports Kenya’s 15 Billion Trees Campaign (2022-2032) and aligns with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
