Police have arrested four people and destroyed over 1,000 litres of illicit brew during a multi-agency crackdown on drugs and illicit brew in several areas of Mombasa County.
The crackdown in Majaoni and Kadongo areas in Kisauni Sub-County was preceded by the unveiling of a Rapid Response Initiative (RRI) targeting to eliminate illegal manufacturing and consumption of illegal alcoholic drinks in all the six sub counties in the coastal city.
Speaking during the exercise, Mombasa County Commissioner Mr. John Otieno said the RRI will continue until all those behind illicit and dangerous brews are brought to book.
Otieno was accompanied by the Coast NACADA Regional Manager George Karisa and Mombasa Police Commander Steven Matu.
“We are in danger of losing a generation if we continue to let illegal brews thrive. Our youth are getting wasted by alcohol which is not manufactured in the right way,” said the Administrator.
The CC said Kisauni and Mshomoroni areas are notorious for the manufacturing and consumption of illicit brews, saying it has contributed to increased cases of crime and other illegal activities.
He ordered the introduction of suggestion boxes in all government offices to allow residents to share information with authorities for immediate response, noting, it will give citizens power and ability to work together with authorities and avoid victimization.
He also said security has been beefed up in all the six sub-counties to ensure residents and visitors enjoy the festive season in a peaceful environment.
On his part, Karisa said 70 percent of youth in Mombasa consume illicit alcoholic products owing to its accessibility and affordability.
“We are calling for a collaborative effort to eradicate drugs in Mombasa, as 70 per cent of youth consume muguka, miraa and other illicit alcoholic drinks,” added the NACADA official.
