County Government of Bomet Distributes Potato Vines to Boost Food Production

Bomet: The County Government of Bomet has initiated a new program to distribute potato vines to farmers, aiming to enhance food crop production within the region. Over 250,000 bio-fortified sweet potato vines have already been distributed to 500 farmers across the county. This effort is focused on supporting farmers to improve food security, nutrition, and household incomes.

According to Kenya News Agency, the potato vine distribution exercise was led by the County Director of Agriculture, David Korir, and ‘HarvestPlus’ Officer, Gideon Kipchumba. The distribution took place in the Kipsonoi, Kongasis, and Sigor wards, providing farmers with planting materials ahead of the planting season. In Kipsonoi Ward, beneficiaries were from Kapangoror, while in Kongasis Ward, farmers from Nyatembe and Kesosio received the vines. In Sigor Ward, the distribution targeted farmers from Kosia and Tumoi.

David Korir urged farmers to plant the vines promptly and to adopt recommended agronomic practices to maximize yields. He emphasized that bio-fortified sweet potatoes contribute significantly to food security, nutrition, and income generation through the sale of fresh produce and value-added products. The county government’s distribution of vines and other crop seeds and seedlings demonstrates its commitment to providing quality planting materials and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

This initiative is expected to lead to improved harvests, better household nutrition, and enhanced livelihoods for the farmers in the region.
