The National Council of NGOs has condemned the mass killing of 11 people burnt in their homesteads on Tuesday night and other major killings that have been happening in Napeiton village in Turkana East.
Speaking on Thursday in his office at Nyayo House, the Chairman of the National Council of NGOs Stephen Cheboi said that the government should take action on what has been happening in Napeiton.
Cheboi requested the government to give security to the people and other actions like compensating the people of Napeiton who have lost their loved ones.
“We are aware that the government has been putting efforts in the security matters of these areas but there is no much action, they should add more security for these people,” said Cheboi.
A member of the Council who is a resident of Napeiton, Rebecca Luguya said that the people of Napeiton and Kapedo need to be treated equally in terms of security just as the other counties.
Luguya also expressed her fear of heading to the village to cast her vote on Election Day
She also said that the people of Napeiton may not participate in the general election due to insecurity incidents.
“We as women are worried for our safety and that of our children. We are a sad lot for these happenings and we are worried that we are isolated as though we are not part of the citizens of Kenya,” said Luguya.
She further urged the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National government Fred Matiang’i to visit Napeiton village and deploy more officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) to guard the area to help reduce the insecurity.
The resident indicated that business is not the same and people are suffering from hunger since no one can operate a business or get out to get a meal for their family for fear of their lives.
“Everyone has a right to life and protection from the government. We therefore request to be protected and feel secure as members of this nation,” she reiterated.
Monica Edukon, also another Napeiton resident said that she could not travel to her village without an escort since she had received warning from her family members on the happenings.
