Nandi: The National Council for People Living with Disability (NCPWD) has initiated a comprehensive weeklong mass registration outreach for People Living With Disability (PWD) in Nandi County. This program is focused on enhancing the wellbeing of PWDs by providing essential services and support.
According to Kenya News Agency, the outreach targets specific areas in Nandi East and Tindiret Sub Counties, offering services ranging from disability medical assessments for e-citizen registration, assessments for assistive devices, therapy provision, and awareness creation. On the first day of the exercise at Chepkunyuk ward in Nandi East Sub County, NCPWD national chair Elizabeth Chesang highlighted the benefits available to differently abled individuals and urged residents to bring out children with disabilities to access necessary services.
Chesang expressed concern that some parents and caregivers still hide differently abled children. She encouraged them to utilize the available services to ensure these children can access educational institutions like their peers. On the first day, 41 PWDs were registered for NCPWD certificates. The council offers various support mechanisms, including scholarships and assistive devices.
Nandi County disability officer Rose Simiyu emphasized the importance of acquiring an NCPWD certificate to benefit from council services. The requirements for registration include a medical assessment report, a National Identity card for those over 18, and a birth certificate for children under 18. Simiyu advised forming groups and registering with the social services office to facilitate easier access to support.
Simiyu also mentioned that the registration process includes providing diapers for epileptic and cerebral palsy children, offering therapy services, and assessing assistive devices. She highlighted benefits such as tax exemptions for working individuals and business persons and when importing a vehicle for mobility.
Vivian Ng’etich, Nandi County coordinator liaison office for PWDs, acknowledged the challenges faced by parents with children with disabilities. She called on administrators and residents to support and sensitize these families to ensure they access their entitled services. Ng’etich praised NCPWD for their ongoing support.
The NCPWD team plans to continue the registration exercise at various locations throughout the week, including Ol’lessos and Kapchorwa wards in Nandi Hills constituency and Sitek Health Centre in Tindiret ward, concluding on Friday at Chemase Health Centre in Chemelil/Chemase ward.
