Nairobi: A group of individuals living with HIV in Molo sub-county are transforming their lives and communities through Community ART Groups (CAGs). These groups, consisting of people from the same community who are on antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), aim to empower members to manage their health and reduce the stigma associated with HIV.

According to Kenya News Agency, Janet, a 40-year-old resident of the Kenyatta area in Molo, was bedridden for nine months and had lost hope until she was introduced to a CAG at Molo Sub-County Hospital. The group inspired her to begin taking ARVs, which significantly improved her health, allowing her to regain strength and manage daily tasks. She attributes her recovery to the support and encouragement she received from the group.

Similarly, Linet Pendo, another member of the CAG, discovered her HIV status during a routine check-up in 2009. Despite following medical advice, her child contracted the virus due to inadequate precautions during childbirth. Both she and her child have since achieved an undetectable viral load by consistently taking their ARVs, a significant step in preventing the transmission of the virus. Pendo highlights the economic empowerment gained through the group’s table banking activities, which have enabled her to start a small business.

The Voice of Love CAG in Molo, with 15 members, meets monthly to support each other and participate in economic activities. Members contribute to a communal fund for loans, fostering entrepreneurship and mutual assistance. The group has made significant progress, accessing external loans and receiving six-month drug supplies biannually, reducing the need to visit healthcare facilities frequently.

Nakuru County AIDS and STI Coordinator Rachael Kiuna emphasizes the commitment to expanding health education and support through community members. She notes a positive trend in the adoption of CAGs within Molo sub-county, enhancing follow-ups and retention in care. These initiatives have improved access to HIV-related services, reduced healthcare costs, and alleviated the burden on healthcare workers.

Efforts to combat HIV in the region include frequent testing, media campaigns, community health promoters, mandatory testing during pregnancy, and tackling cultural practices that exacerbate the spread of the virus. Despite progress, Nakuru County remains among the top ten counties with high new infection rates, highlighting the ongoing challenge of managing HIV.
