Nairobi: As the nation shifts its focus to the upcoming 2027 elections, communities across Kenya have been urged to embrace their cultural heritage and diversity as a cornerstone of national unity and cohesion.
According to Kenya News Agency, this call was emphasized during the Cultural Week celebrations held at Michuki National Polytechnic. The event saw students from various technical training institutions come together to celebrate their heritage, transforming the institution’s grounds into a vibrant showcase of customs, artefacts, and cuisines from different communities across the country.
The celebration provided a platform for dialogue, interaction, and collaboration among young people from diverse backgrounds. Michuki National Polytechnic (MINAP) Chief Principal, Ms. Ann Mbogo, expressed pride in celebrating Kenya’s cultural diversity, highlighting it as a source of belonging and national pride. She emphasized that the event brings to life the strength and nationalism of the country by celebrating its diversity.
Ms. Mbogo noted that such events allow students to learn from one another’s traditions and appreciate different ways of life. She observed that embracing cultural diversity fosters peace and unity, which is crucial, especially during politically sensitive periods.
James Nguma, a trainer at the institution, highlighted that the event enabled students to interact freely with peers from across the country, thereby strengthening unity among the youth. He noted the importance of such initiatives as the country heads toward the 2027 elections, suggesting that ethnic and cultural differences should be seen as strengths that promote innovation and social harmony.
Students, including Bukayo Wario from Taita, shared their experiences, emphasizing the importance of understanding and appreciating other communities. Wario expressed that the event fosters togetherness, peace, and unity, encouraging Kenyans to live beyond tribal divisions, especially as elections approach.
Kelvin Leiyan, while showcasing Maasai artefacts, remarked that the event demonstrated the potential for young people to unite regardless of their ethnic backgrounds. He emphasized the importance of electing leaders based on their ability to drive development and change, rather than tribal affiliations.
This year’s celebrations were themed ‘United in diversity, celebrating Kenya’s cultural richness and talent,’ underscoring the importance of cultural heritage in promoting national unity.
