Mombasa: The Committee Overseeing the Implementation of the 10-point agenda under the NADCO report (COIN-10) has condemned the resurgence of political thuggery and violence in public rallies. The committees’ members expressed fears that the wave of intolerance displayed in recent times could claw back the gains envisaged by the Head of State and the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
According to Kenya News Agency, the five-member COIN-10 oversight committee was constituted following an agreement between UDA and ODM to oversee the implementation of the 10-point agenda and key proposals of the NADCO report. It is chaired by Dr Agnes Zani, with Javas Bigambo as vice-chairman; other members are Fatuma Ibrahim, Kevin Kiarie, and Gabriel Oguda.
Speaking during a courtesy call at the Mombasa County Secretary’s office ahead of a public forum, COIN-10 Vice Chairman, Javas Bigambo, urged politicians to ensure their public meetings are devoid of violence, as it goes against the spirit of inclusivity as envisioned in the 10-point agenda. Bigambo emphasized the importance of inclusion, harmony, and cooperation, urging that violence, chaos, hatred, tribal, and political divisions should be avoided in political gatherings.
The County Government of Mombasa was commended for ensuring inclusivity within its ranks. Bigambo mentioned that the County Secretary provided a list of policies and measures that could be implemented to further the 10-point agenda, benefiting both Mombasa and the rest of Kenya.
COIN-10 Chairperson Agnes Zani praised Mombasa for its innovative approaches to increasing own-source revenue, ensuring self-reliance, and sustaining devolution. She noted that these discussions and ideas could be shared with other counties. The committee plans to hold several public forums before submitting their final report on March 7.
Committee member Fatuma Ibrahim praised Mombasa for gender, youth, and disability inclusivity in its workforce, with 49 percent women and 51 percent men. She expressed hope that this reflects accurately in the county’s report. Ibrahim also noted that Mombasa experienced minimal destruction during recent Gen-Z and opposition protests. She supported the proposal to designate the Mama Ngina Waterfront as a demonstration area, allowing demonstrators to air their concerns adequately.
Mombasa County Secretary and Head of Public Service Jeizan Faruk highlighted the county’s intention to exploit opportunities presented by the committee. He commended the committee for its progress and for facilitating public forums for Kenyans to share their views.
