Civil Registration Department Expands Services in Vihiga County

Vihiga: The department of Civil Registration has opened offices in all six Sub Counties of Vihiga County, aimed at taking services closer to the people. In an interview with KNA at his office, Sabatia Sub County Civil Registrar Edwin Nganga said they have now opened offices in all the Sub Counties so that citizens can access services easily.

According to Kenya News Agency, Nganga stated that initially, residents of Sabatia Sub County had to travel to Mbale at the County headquarters to process their birth and death certificates, which was costly and inconvenient. Since the Sabatia office opened on April 13, 2026, over 50 birth certificates and six death certificates have been issued.

Nganga advised residents to process and collect birth certificates for their children within three months of registration to avoid crowding at the office. He also urged area assistant chiefs to submit monthly returns of births and deaths to ensure timely processing of certificates.

The civil registrar emphasized the importance of honesty and providing correct information during registration, expressing concerns over child trafficking in Sabatia Sub County. Nganga mentioned that some applicants claim their documents were burned in house fires, which raises suspicion.

A resident of Mudete in Sabatia Sub County, Jackline Muhonja, praised the government for opening an office nearby, reducing the need to travel to the county office for services. Muhonja expressed satisfaction, noting that residents can now walk to the office instead of spending money on transport to Mbale.

The sixth office was also opened in Tiriki East Sub County at Shaviringa to serve the local population.
