Nairobi: Hundreds of students from Chuka University gathered on Wednesday for a peaceful procession through Ndagani, Tharaka Nithi County, mourning the loss of Kenya’s long-serving opposition leader and former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga. Raila Odinga passed away in India while receiving treatment following a cardiac arrest.
According to Kenya News Agency, the Chuka University Students’ Association (CUSA) organized the solemn march, which saw students carrying candles and placards with messages of peace, unity, and remembrance. The participants sang patriotic songs in tribute to the late statesman, whose political career spanned more than four decades.
CUSA President Ben Onyango, who led the procession, described Raila Odinga as ‘a real legend’ whose efforts in promoting democracy significantly shaped Kenya’s political landscape. Onyango stated, ‘We have lost a true national hero, a man who dedicated his life to championing justice, democracy, and equality. We are walking not just for Raila, but for the values he lived for.’
Student Otieno Joak also acknowledged Raila’s contributions to advancing devolution and empowering citizens through democratic reforms. Joak remarked, ‘Raila strengthened our democracy and believed leadership belongs to the people, not the powerful few. His death is a huge loss to the nation.’
The peaceful procession drew local residents along the Ndagani-Chuka road, many of whom waved the national flag and joined the students in song. Resident Jevio Justin praised Raila for his efforts in uniting Kenyans across political and regional divides, stating, ‘He stood for all Kenyans, a true symbol of hope and resilience. Even in defeat, he taught us that peace and patriotism come first.’
Raila Odinga’s passing has prompted a wave of condolence messages from across the country and abroad. Former Chief Justice David Maraga and former Attorney General Githu Muigai described him as a patriot, democrat, and Pan-Africanist who redefined Kenya’s political history. Regional bodies, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU), paid tribute to Raila, recognizing him as one of Africa’s most influential figures and a steadfast advocate for freedom, devolution, and good governance.
In response to Raila’s passing, President William Ruto has announced a seven-day national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast as a state committee coordinates funeral arrangements.
